  • Is it a sign of personal weakness or strength for a woman to admit that she has a problem with alcohol or drugs?
  • I feel it is definitely a sign of personal strength for a woman to admit she has a problem with alcohol or drugs. The root causes and factors than can influence addictions are complex. Women may tend to struggle with guilt from destructive behaviors. This can result in a vicious cycle, digging her deeper into the addiction. When a woman can love herself enough to seek help, an enormous maturity growth and a personal success has occurred. I think women have the opportunity to model behaviors that they would want their husbands, children, friends, and loved ones to also choose. Addiction recovery is a difficult road, but an honest approach to behavior that is harmful to oneself and to others is the first step.

  1. The first step to addiction recovery is admitting the addiction. This is a very difficult step and many addicts are never able to get past step one. My brother was addicted to alcohol and drugs for a number of years and has been clean and sober for over twenty years, but his recovery was not possible until he admitted his responsibility for the addiction - he had to say "I HAVE A PROBLEM" not "somebody caused me to have a problem". He is deeply involved in AA and holds meetings all over west Texas and eastern New Mexico, some in state prisons. He believes very strongly in supporting addicts in their efforts to beat their addictions and in the AA program. Some of the prisoners who participated in his programs while incarcerated have continued in the program once released. Continuous support is a key in maintaining recovery and it takes lots of committed people to provide this support.
